The Moss Brothers, Reuben and Evan, of Piedmont, California - ages eleven and fourteen respectively - are already so musically accomplished, their original material so well-conceived, that they are sure to attract fans of not just their own age but years older as well. A mature sound full of catchy hooks, melodic sophistication, and thoughtful (often witty) lyrics, this is feel good music with an edge. |

The Moss Brothers Home Page Reuben Moss, age eleven, was composing as a pre-schooler and began studying guitar at age four. He made his debut at age five, performing his song "I Live In France" at an open mike night at Freight and Salvage coffee house in Berkeley. He can't remember a time when he wasn't a guitarist. "I got started when I was two years old. I'd always been playing air guitar. I got my first guitar when I was four and I took some lessons, and I've been playing ever since. When I was young, like 3 to 5, I really liked Eric Clapton. My brother got me listening to lots of other music, like alternative rock, and my teacher Jim Gleason is a really good guitarist and he shows me good [cover] songs." How does he get his ideas for original songs? "They just come to my head, basically. I guess they're in my head." Evan Moss, age fourteen, studied classical piano and clarinet before taking up the drums at age ten. "I always went around drumming, and I always hear the drums in music. I can hear everything else too, but I don't pay the most attention to the other parts," he explains. His influences? "Dave Grohl, when he was still with Nirvana, influenced me. The music I listen to affects my playing forever. I hear new drum parts and say, 'wow, that's cool,' and then I modify them and I play them from then on." Asked how he comes up with his jazz-like drum parts that go beyond the simple backbeat, Evan says the same thing as his brother: "it just comes to my head." |
